DISCUSSION QUESTION:
Now that we’re through the first major assignment of the semester, I’d like you to take some time and reflect on what you’ve completed AND on the role writing plays in engineering. Create a new thread and address both of the following 2 prompts.
Write a 1-2 paragraph reflection on the Lab Report. Consider the following questions:
- Was this assignment meaningful to you? Why or why not?
- What skills can you take away from this assignment to use in the future?
- What did you like or dislike about this assignment and why?
- What are you proudest of regarding this assignment? Why?
Now think about the podcast you listened to, and reflect on the role of writing in engineering. Write 1-2 paragraphs considering the following questions:
- Which podcast did you listen to and why did you choose it?
- Did the podcast change the way you view the role writing has in engineering? Why or why not?
- How would you define the role writing has in engineering?
ANSWER:
My lab report was about tensile stress on an object to test its elastic elongation as it is pulled. While doing the report I found it very meaningful because it was good practice for my engineering 101 class. The skill of being very detailed and organized about the steps is definitely something I will be using in the future when doing other lab reports. With that being said, I absolutely loved doing this lab report although it was very long. I am proud of understanding my task because usually I am lost about what I am being asked to do.
I chose to listen to the Elijah Jones on writing question podcast. The reason being, throughout the podcast an electrical engineer goes an about he changes in his career path and ended up as a manufacturing engineer for electrical. Although, I am not an electrical engineering major student, I too want to be in the manufacturing path for mechanical engineering, annd I also worked on electronic components like circuit boards in high school. The podcast didn’t change my view on the role writing has in engineering however listening to the podcast did better my view. From doing the previous assignments in this class I understood that writing is very important when it comes to presenting your idea and listening to the podcast made me better understand the importance of it. For example, in the podcast, Elijah talks about the importance of acronyms, which he refers to as “change orders” and how “they call different things at different companies”, which can cause confusion, for which role writing in engineering is very important.
